Hurricanes: An Introduction

Hurricanes are large swirling storms that form over oceans. Hurricanes can have wind speeds up to 200 MPH and can consume tons of trillions of liters of water each day. Hurricanes, when they come ashore can bring severe damage, floods, destruction, landslides, storm surges, and even can produce a tornado. The National Hurricane Center, issues hurricane watches and is in charge of notifying us about upcoming hurricanes in advance. The word hurricane comes from Spanish, huracán, meaning god of the storm. In this presentation, you will learn about different aspects of hurricanes, from how they form to how scientists choose their names.
